Before my Lenten consumption fast kicked in, I ordered a copy of the newly restored DVD of the film Bicycle Thieves. When I first saw the movie (big screen at the Toronto Film Festival back in 2000), it was called the “The Bicycle Thief,” but the title has been re-translated for this most recent release. I’ll be watching this amazing film again this week, along with all the extra features and then some. It would be impossible for me to overstate how wonderful this movie is. In all its simplicity, in 89 minutes, and with a cast of non-actors, DeSica tells one of the most powerful stories you’ll ever see.
